ROAD TEST
Starting February 1, 2023 a road test will no longer be required to obtain a Class 4 driver’s licence, which is required to transport passengers in taxis, ride-share vehicles, limousines, small buses and ambulances.
Starting April 1, 2023, Albertans will no longer require the advanced road test for Class 5 and Class 6 Graduated Driver’s Licences (GDL). For more information, please click here |
You will receive a Road Test Confirmation via email after the booking is completed. It is your responsibility to verify the booking information and comply with all required regulations for the road test.

Eligibility Requirement
- You must arrive to your appointment 30 minutes prior to your road test appointment. Please check in with a registry clerk who will verify your eligibility to take the road test. Failure to arrive ahead of your scheduled appointment time may result in your appointment being cancelled with no refund. Click here for our operating hours
- You must produce a valid Alberta Learner's or Driver's Licence - you may provide a valid temporary licence with an additional piece of government issued photo identification like a passport, permanent resident card or Nexus card.
- You must meet the minimum age requirements and all requirements for the licence class you are being tested for:

Class 5 - Graduated Driver's Licence
- have had a Class 7 learner's licence with at least one year of driving experience
- be at least 16 years old
- if you're under 18, you must have consent from a parent or legal guardian
- parent or legal guardian must be present
- be a Canadian citizen, a Canadian permanent resident, hold a valid work or student visa, and/or have an approved refugee claim from the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada
- have valid acceptable identification and proof of residency
Class 6, Motorcycle - Graduated Driver's Licence (for new drivers)
- be at least 16 years old
- pass a Class 6 knowledge test
- if you're under 18, you must have written consent from a parent or legal guardian
- parent / legal guardian must be present
- be a Canadian citizen, a Canadian permanent resident, hold a valid work or student visa, and/or have an approved refugee claim from the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada
- have valid acceptable identification and proof of residency

- All outstanding fines on your motor vehicle file must be paid ahead of your road test or the road test will not proceed and no refund will be issued.
- If you are reinstating your licence, please call the registry where you are taking your test prior to booking your test to confirm your eligibility.
- You must meet all conditions on your driver's licence.

Vehicle/Equipment Requirements
- No passengers, pets, food, drinks, smoking, use of mobile device, personal grooming or other distractions are allowed during the road test.
- The use of a cellular telephone, bluetooth, dash camera, audio or video recording devices, citizen band radio or similar device, in any manner, is prohibited during a road test by the client, with the exception of use of a cell phone as directed by an examiner when conducting a Class 6 road test.
- If you provide a rental vehicle, you must provide a copy of the contract with your name on it. The contract must indicate that the vehicle can be used for road test purposes when the client holds a class 7 learner's licence.
- Car-sharing company vehicles cannot be used to conduct road tests due to user contracts.

Class 5 - Graduated Driver's Licence
- You must provide a mechanically sound vehicle with original certificate of registration and insurance pink card. The vehicle must have enough fuel for the test, functioning headlights, brake lights, signal lights, horn, speedometer, brakes, seatbelts, vehicle controls, windshield wipers and exhaust system; unobstructed windshields and mirrors with all windows free of tint; tires in good condition; and the vehicle must have a clean uncluttered passenger seat for the examiner (except for motorcycle road tests). A driver examiner may cancel the test at any time if they feel unsafe.
Class 6, Motorcycle - Graduated Driver's Licence
- You must provide a mechanically sound vehicle with original certificate of registration and insurance pink card. The vehicle must have enough fuel for the test, functioning headlights, brake lights, signal lights, horn, speedometer, brakes, vehicle controls, windshield wipers and exhaust system; unobstructed windshields and mirrors; and tires in good condition; A driver examiner may cancel the test at any time if they feel unsafe.
- You must also provide an approved helmet (must have label or mark from CSA, DOT, BSI or SNELL) - unless you qualify for exemption under the Sikh helmet exemption, fully charged cellphone and earbuds with embedded microphone to allow for communication with the examiner.
Cancellations, re-booking and no-show policy
- If you are late to your appointment or fail to show up, you will not receive a refund. You will be responsible for rescheduling and paying for a new road test.
- If you need to reschedule your road test you must contact us during business hours at least 2 business days (48 hours) before your scheduled appointment with a $15 rescheduling fee.
- You may only reschedule your test up to 2 times.
- Rescheduling road tests must be done in person or by telephone and you must speak to a clerk. Voicemails or emails will not be accepted.
- If you need to cancel your road test, you must contact us during business hours at least 2 business days (48 hours) before your scheduled appointment with a $15 cancellation fee.
- Re-booking is only allowed for up to one year from the originally scheduled appointment date.
- If you do not meet eligibility requirements, do not have required documentation or if the vehicle you provide for your road test is deemed unsafe you are not eligible for a refund. Road test fees are non-transferable and non-refundable.

- Driver Examiners may cancel a road test on short notice or onsite due to poor weather conditions as determined by the driver examiner. If your exam is cancelled due to poor or unsafe weather conditions you will be able to reschedule the test at no additional fee.
- Driver examiners can cancel the road test if they feel that you are unsafe to drive due to a physical or cognitive impairment or suspect that you are impaired by alcohol or drugs. If a test is cancelled for these reasons, you will not receive a refund.
